T&DI Board of Governors Elections This is a reminder that ballots for the 2006 T&DI BOG Elections must be received no later than July 1, 2006. Ballots were mailed to all T&DI members in good standing. Completed ballots can be faxed to T&DI at 703-295-6421 or mailed to T&DI's office. Below you will find each candidate's qualifications.
JOHN M. MASON, JR., Ph.D., P.E., M.ASCE
Dr. John M. Mason, Jr., P.E., is the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies, Research and Outreach in the College of Engineering at Penn State University. He is a Professor of Civil Engineering, and also serves as the Director of the Pennsylvania Transportation Institute and the Director for the Mid-Atlantic University Transportation Center. His background consists of teaching, research, private practice and administrative responsibilities. Dr. Mason’s duties include industry development initiatives, state and federal agency interactions, governmental affairs, and intellectual property issues. Dr. Mason has served as chair of the Geometric Design Committee of the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies; the executive committee, Highway Division, American Society of Civil Engineers; the Education and Training Committee of the Intelligent Transportation Society of America; several technical committees of the international Institute of Transportation Engineers, and as a past-president of the national Council of University Transportation Centers. Most recently he has been the chair of the Policy Subcommittee of the TRB Task Force for the Development of the Highway Safety Manual.
Dr. Mason holds a B.S. degree in Transportation from Penn State University, a M.S. in Transportation Engineering from Villanova University, and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University. He is also a registered professional engineer in Pennsylvania. His honors and awards include:
Dr. Mason has provided expert testimony on highway design criteria for several state highway and transportation agencies. He has written and lectured extensively on highway geometric design, tort liability, and highway safety and operational issues. He is currently serving as the Senior Editor for the ITE Handbook series on Geometric Design that integrates safety and operational effects with the geometric design features of rural highways, urban arterials and freeway/interchange facilities.
Matthew M. McDole, P. E., M.ASCE
Mr. McDole is currently the Chief Engineer at the E-470 Public Highway Authority, a position he has held since September 1995. The responsibilities of this position include direction and management of the planning, environmental and jurisdictional permitting, design and construction of this Denver Metro area tollway and its capital improvements. During his tenure, E-470 has expanded from a 5-mile tollway to its full 47-mile route with associated operations and maintenance facilities. Overall, Mr. McDole has broad and varied experience in planning, design, construction and maintenance of various transportation systems. In his over 40 years of experience, he has held engineering and management positions with a railroad, two transit agencies, a tollway authority and a consultant. His engineering career started with the Southern Pacific Railroad in railroad design and construction. Mr. McDole has held the top engineering management position at the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART), the Denver RTD, and in his current position at the E-470 Public Highway Authority. He was also a principle in the consulting firm of Kellogg Corporation where he managed the Construction Services group. At BART, he managed the completion of the initial construction and the early phases of a multi-billion dollar extension program. At E-470, he managed development of 42 miles of the four-lane tollway to early under budget completion through two design build contracts with a value over $620 million. Mr. McDole holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering, from the University of Arizona and has done Graduate work in Engineering and Business Administration at University of California Berkeley and California State University.
