Transportation and Development Institute Journals Seek Paper Reviewers

T&DI sponsors three peer-reviewed archival journals.  All are in continuing need of submittal reviewers.  Paper reviewers provide a valuable service to the professional community and also can learn new approaches and results from reviewing new papers in their specialization areas.  If you are interested in becoming a reviewer, contact the editors, providing your specialty area of expertise and interest:

The Journal of Infrastructure Systems publishes cross-disciplinary papers about methodologies for monitoring, evaluating, expanding, repairing, replacing, financing, or otherwise sustaining the civil infrastructure.  Contact: Samer Madamet, madanat@ce.berkeley.edu

The Journal of Transportation Engineering contains technical and professional articles on the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and operation of air, highway, and urban transportation, as well as pipeline facilities for water, oil, and gas. Specific topics include airport and highway pavement maintenance and performance; management of roads and bridges; traffic management technology; construction and operation of pipelines; and economics and environmental aspects of urban transportation systems.  Contact: Chris Hendrickson, cth@cmu.edu

The Journal of Urban Planning and Development covers the application of civil engineering to such aspects of urban planning as area-wide transportation, the coordination of planning and programming of public works and utilities, and the development and redevelopment of urban areas. Subjects include environmental assessment, esthetic considerations, land use planning, underground utilities, infrastructure management, renewal legislation, transportation planning, and evaluation of the economic value of state parks. Fostering Further Growth

by Kam K. Movassaghi, Ph.D., P.E., M.ASCE
President, Transportation and Development Institute of the ASCE

Kam

Your institute, T&DI, was established on October 1, 2002.  Soon after, in February 2004, the institute councils and committee chairs participated in an institute-wide strategic planning workshop in San Diego and produced our first strategic plan.  For the past three years, T&DI has operated based on that plan and has met many of its goals and objectives.  The Institute Board of Governors felt the time had come to have another gathering and to refresh the 2004 Strategic Plan.  The Board felt that our institute had grown through its infancy and needed to review its past and plan for a future that would aggressively foster its further growth and development in providing products and services that are demanded by our society and institute membership. It was decided to have a “leadership workshop” in conjunction with the Board’s fall meeting. It was decided to invite all council and committee chairs to interact with the board members and map out what this institute needs to do in the next few years. Specifically, four issues were identified:

Two New Analysis Briefs Published by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's (FMCSA) Analysis Division

Two new analysis briefs were recently published by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) Analysis Division.  The "Large Truck Crash Causation Study” analysis brief contains a short summary of some of the important results from the Study, including relative risk ratios that examine the relationship between the coding of various large truck driver and vehicle factors for crashes where the large truck driver was assigned the “critical reason.”  The “2005 Large Truck Crash Overview” is the tenth installment in FMCSA’s publication that examines basic data on large truck crashes, including a comparative analysis of large trucks and passenger vehicles involved in fatal and injury crashes.

For electronic copies of these publications, access the FMCA’s main Web site at www.fmcsa.dot.gov.  To find the Large Truck Crash Causation Study Analysis Brief, please click on the tab for the Large Truck Crash Causation Study and then access the “Analysis Briefs” tab.  The 2005 Large Truck Crash Overview can be found by accessing the Analysis and Information (A&I) Web site or directly (www.ai.fmcsa.dot.gov) and then clicking on the Analysis Results and Reports tab.  If you have any questions or comments about these brochures, please contact the FMCSA Analysis Division at (202) 366-4039.
