Reports Are In!

by Kam K. Movassaghi, Ph.D., P.E., M.ASCE
President, Transportation and Development Institute of the ASCE

Kam

In my last article I reported on your Board of Governors November 29 and 30th meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina.  I also reported on the formation of four task committees to look into the organizational structure of T&DI, T&DI conferences, the “D” in T&DI and sustainability in transportation.

The reports are in!  T&DI Board of Governors and Council chairs spent a day and a half (February 22 & 23) analyzing and discussing the reports and recommendations.  First, I would like to express the Board’s sincerest gratitude to the four task committees for a job well done.  The four task committees were chaired by David Lee on T&DI Conferences, Scott Murrell on Organizational Structure,  Adjo Amekudzi on Sustainability and Sandra Otto on “D” in T&DI.  It is important to note that there was a great deal of cross pollination and contribution between the members of all task committees.  The entire exercise was conducted with a great deal of energy and enthusiasm, and I would like to thank all participants for their efforts and contributions.

T&DI Co-Sponsors Design-Build Conference

The 10th Annual Design-Build in Transportation Conference will be held April 16 – 18, in Louisville, KY.  From the beginning, ASCE and T&DI have been instrumental in the formation and development of this conference with the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA).

Since T&DI’s formation in 2002, it has co-sponsored this annual event with DBIA.  ASCE’s Highway Division was the co-sponsor before T&DI’s formation.  Also, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has always been a co-sponsor.  Now the American Public Transportation Association has joined as a co-sponsor as well.  This year’s conference is termed, “TRANSPOWER 2008 – Planes, Trains, Automobiles…& Ships!”  The 2008 conference will feature three tracks.  One on Ports, Airports & Rails.  A second on Roads & Bridges and a third on Issues and Emerging Trends.  This conference is the preeminent conference on Design-Build delivery of Transportation projects.  Members who have an interest in this area should have a close look at this conference.

T&DI Vice President, Matt McDole, is a member of the Conference Program Committee, chairs the Transportation Owners Council and will represent T&DI at the conference.  Further, information and the registration form can be found at www.designbuildtransportation.com.

2007 Winning Poster

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) annually sponsors the National Transportation Week (NTW) program.  In 2008 NTW is May 11 - 17.  NTW is aimed at youth to educate them and encourage them to consider the transportation industry as one of their career choices. Each year there is a poster contest for 5th grade students that awards savings bonds to the winners and cash to their school.  T&DI encourages its members to link with an elementary school and help a student with an entry to the poster contest and help the teachers with the suggested topics for classroom discussion that can be found on the NTW website.  The rules for the poster contest and other information on the poster contest and NTW can be found at www.ntweek.org.  If you have questions concerning NTW contact T&DI at tanddi@asce.org or NTWeek@fhwa.dot.gov.

Committee Updates

Great Attendance at Annual Airfield Pavement Committee Meeting

The Airfield Pavement Committee held its annual meeting on Sunday, January 13st, 2008 in conjunction with TRB in Washington, D.C.  The meeting was well attended by more than 60 members and colleagues.

Key topics of discussion included the upcoming 2008 T&DI Airfield and Highways Pavement Specialty Conference to be held in Seattle, 13-15 Oct 2008.  Conference plans are well underway – abstracts have been reviewed and accepted, and tours of Boeing’s assembly line as well as the new Sea-Tac Runway are scheduled.

The committee adopted a new, more inclusive mission statement at the meeting.  Our mission now states “To gather, review, develop, evaluate and disseminate new criteria, research, technologies and other information in the areas of Airfield Pavement Design, Evaluation, Construction and Maintenance.  To liaison with government agencies and industrial groups to identify airfield pavement issues that need further research, guidance or criteria development.”

Bernadette Caparas, Advisory Circular Review Coordinator, reported on the accomplishments of the committee in the last year, which included providing comments on six draft FAA Advisory Circulars.  She encouraged more members to take this opportunity to voice their opinion on upcoming draft Circulars.

Rich Thuma encouraged members to submit nominations for the Horonjeff Award; nominations and sponsors due to APC by 1 Apr 08, followed by Eroom Ballot (votes by mid-April), and our Nomination Package due to T&DI 1 Nov 07.

Five Minute Updates” were provided from the DoD, FAA, AAPTP, IPRF, and the asphalt and concrete industry associations.  In addition, a technical brief+ was presented on the ice runways in Antarctica used by the US Air Force.

For questions, more information about the meeting, or obtaining a membership application form, contact Rich Thuma (217-787-8050, rthuma@cmtengr.com) or Greg Cline (805-982-3655, gregory.d.cline@navy.mil).
