Washington D.C. Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Workshop

By Walt Kulyk, P.E., M.ASCE

Chair Public Transportation Committee of T&DI

T&DI’s Public Transport Committee hosted a workshop on Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) at the Residence Inn Capitol, Washington, DC on  April 20-21, 2006. The purpose of the workshop was to provide a forum allowing the Civil Engineering and transit communities to share knowledge, experience, and ideas about BRT operations, its elements, and its benefits.  Information and recommendations from the workshop will be shared with the Federal Transit Administration which is updating the document, Characteristics of Bus Rapid Transit for Decision Making (CBRT), which was released in October 2004.

Nearly fifty people, who are highly involved in BRT projects in the USA and other countries, participated in the workshop. After welcome and introductory comments by the Committee Chairman, Walter Kulyk, transit professionals from Los Angeles, Cleveland, and Las Vegas gave overview presentations of the BRT projects in their cities. General overviews of the CBRT document and BRT operations in developing countries were also presented. The next day’s morning was fully devoted to discussing the major sections of the CBRT and recommendations for improvements and updates.  Facilitators chosen from the participants enabled productive discussions.

Based on the discussions at the Workshop, the Public Transport Committee is now working on preparing civil engineering related recommendations for the forthcoming CBRT’s update.
