Report from the April 28-29, 2006

Meeting of the

ASCE Council of Institute Leaders

by

Eva Lerner-Lam, M.ASCE, T&DI President

Louis F. Cohn, Ph.D., F.ASCE, T&DI Vice-President

As the presidential officers of the T&DI Board of Governors, it is our privilege to represent you as members of the ASCE Council of Institute Leaders (CIL).  CIL includes representatives from all seven ASCE Institutes, as well as the Technical Region Director and the members of the ASCE Board of Direction representing the institutes.  The current chair of CIL is none other than our own Bob Costigan, who is a former president of T&DI.

CIL usually meets in conjunction with the ASCE Board of Direction meetings, one of which was held in Reston, VA at the ASCE headquarters on April 28-29, 2006.  The agenda was rather full; it included a session with the ASCE Executive Director Pat Natale, President Dennis Martenson, and President-Elect Bill Marcuson.  In addition, we had a “Meet the Staff” session, in which most of the ASCE and Institute senior staff made short presentations.   We also received a detailed report from our only current Technical Region Director, Stan Caldwell.

Among the agenda items that may be of interest to T&DI members were:

  • Discussions with the representatives of the proposed new Engineering Mechanics Institute (EMI), which was approved for further action by the ASCE Board of Direction.
  • The election of our second Technical Region Director.  The candidates are Max Porter of SEI and Tom Rachford of EWRI.  Both are excellent candidates who would well represent the views of the Institutes to the ASCE Board of Direction.  Voting will be by mailed or electronic proxy ballot due between June 15 and August 15.  Last year only 5% of the Institute electorate voted, so please vote this year.  By policy, T&DI does not endorse candidates, but as mentioned, both are excellent.
  • An update on the Civil Engineering Form for Innovation (CEFI), which is the successor organization to the old Civil Engineering Foundation (CERF).

If you are interested in more information, let either of us know, and we will forward it to you as it becomes available.
