T&DI Announces the First International Symposium on Transportation and Development Innovative Best Practices

Beijing, China

April 24-26, 2008

The Transportation and Development Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers is sponsoring the First International Symposium on Transportation and Development Innovative Best Practices in Beijing, China, April 24-26, 2008.  The purpose of this series of symposia is to showcase innovative best practices in comprehensive and integrated transportation and economic development from around the world.

The three-day Symposium, the last major international conference to be held in Beijing prior to the Olympics in August 2008, will be hosted by the China Academy of Transportation Sciences and co-sponsored by the North American Chinese Overseas Transportation Association (NACOTA) and the International Chinese Transportation Professionals Association (ICTPA).  The event will be held in conjunction with China Transpo 2008, the China Ministry of Communications’ only international biennial exhibition and the largest international show for transportation in China, featuring a comprehensive overview of the latest technical applications in transportation.

Call For Reviewers!!

Abstracts for the First International Symposium on Transportation and Development Innovative Best Practices to be held in Beijing next year are due by April 30, 2007.  We plan to involve all 19 of our T&DI technical committees in the review process, but we also want to utilize the expertise of as many of the remaining 15,000 T&DI members as possible, as well as any other interested transportation professionals.

Therefore, we invite anyone who may be qualified and interested to contact Lou Cohn, cohn@louisville.edu, to volunteer as a reviewer for the Symposium.  We will put you to work!

One of the great things about T&DI is the wide variety of transportation activities we cover, as well as the worldwide reach of our involvement.  For example, in the last newsletter I discussed the Conference on Context Sensitive Solutions held in Atlanta in November, sponsored by our Committee on Environmental Issues.   Elsewhere in this newsletter, our Past President Eva Lerner-Lam gives details about our First International Symposium on Transportation and Development, to be held in Beijing, China in April, 2008.   This Symposium is designed to involve all nineteen of our technical committees.

T&DI Becomes Lead Organization on the Put the Brakes on Fatalities Program

T&DI recently succeeded the National Society of Professional Engineers as the lead organization responsible for the activities connected with the Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day (PBFD) program.  PBFD was initiated on October 10, 2001 to educate the public about the major causes of transportation fatalities, primarily highway fatalities, and their avoidance in an upbeat and positive fashion.  Since then, on October 10 of each year, states and local communities commemorate Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day with public educational programs.  This program is a great way that you can become involved in educating the public in your community that there are ways to reduce the number of fatalities related to highway crashes.  If you are interested in participating in this activity please contact T&DI's coordinator Rob Bowman at 703-295-6395 or rbowman@asce.org.
