The Airfield Pavement Committee

By Scott Murell, P.E., M.ASCE

Chair, Airfield Pavement Committee

The Airfield Pavement Committee has had a very active summer.  Over the last few months our committee has added 16 new members, bringing our total membership to 109.  These new members along with current members proved helpful in producing thorough, constructive review comments for three important draft Advisory Circulars which were then forwarded to the FAA by T&DI.  The Airfield Pavement Committee would like to thank Bernadette Caparas for coordinating the effort to get member comments for the review and then consolidating those varied comments into one coherent document.

We have also begun a period of planning which includes preparing for our next APC meeting at TRB in January 2007, the specific date of which is still to be determined.  The meeting will be two hours in duration, and will serve as a platform for key individuals to provide “5-minute Updates” on the progress programs.  Preceding this event, Airfield Pavement Designers will get another opportunity to learn about Layered Elastic Flexible Pavement design for Airfields at a webinar taught by Rodney Joel, PE from FAA.  The class is scheduled for Thursday, October 5, at 12:00 pm (EDT).  For more information regarding this event please click here.

Also in October, the APC enters a period of transition as I step down as Committee Chair and Rich Thuma moves into the role.  Greg Cline from the Navy will now step into the vacant Vice Chair position.  It’s been an honor and pleasure to serve the committee, and I’m confident the committee will continue to do great work for years to come.
