Regenesis
By Bret Lizundia, S.E., and Rich Niewiarowski, S.E., M.ASCE

So damaged were the buildings making up San Francisco's de Young Museum during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake that the museum was forced to close. Its rebirth as a striking copper-clad edifice has recaptured its position as a cultural icon and ensured its survival during a significant seismic event.

Autodesk Launches Global Community for University Engineers

You think in 3D, so why build and design in 2D?  On Sept. 5, Autodesk, Inc. officially launched The Student Engineering and Design Community.  As a civil engineering student, you now have access to the professional tools you need to bring your ideas to life - for free.  Discuss projects, share work, learn from community experts, ask and answer questions, and network with other students and educators. Join the Autodesk global community at students.autodesk.com

WSU Students Hope to Cure an Ailing Sudanese Hospital

Imagine traveling 200 miles to the nearest equipped medical facility for treatment.  For occupants of the rural Nubia region of northern Sudan, this is a reality.  But four students at Washington State University hope to change that.  For their senior design project this semester, Steven Greenwood, Brieann Shearer, Sean Johnson and Mohamed Jeite will complete a full structural design for two separate additions to the Abri Hospital that currently lacks electricity, severely crippling the hospitals capabilities.  Read more about their plan in The Daily Evergreen.

Younger Member News

ASCE Younger Members are your gateway to the civil engineering profession and a powerful networking community following graduation.

Are you attending the National Conference in Chicago next month? If so, take the time to meet with the Younger Members who will also be meeting in Chicago. The Younger Member Conference will take place on Saturday, October 21. This is a great opportunity to ask Younger Members first hand what to expect after graduation, how to become involved, why to continue your membership with ASCE after graduation, and more.

Younger Members are those ASCE members who are 35-years-old and younger. Your local ASCE Branch or Section probably has an active Younger Member Group. Younger Member Groups across the country participate in social activities, community service events and technical seminars. Getting involved with your local group while still a student will help you to make contacts that could help you with getting an internship or job after graduation.

Not sure if your local Branch or Section has a Younger Member Group, check out the following Web site, www.asce.org/inside/cym_contacts.cfm#online. Still not sure, feel free to contact Loreen Choate at asceymf@earthlink.net.
