What Should Your New Skills be Worth When You Graduate?

December and upcoming May grads, you've toiled for four years, now it's time to find out what that B.S. is worth.  ASCE collaborates with the National Society of Professional Engineers and the Institute of Industrial Engineers to make sure you know with The Engineering Income and Salary Survey.

The survey, accessible in print or online, encompasses 35 disciplines and 16,000 engineering professionals.  Search salaries by geographic region, state, or major city.  So, when you're entering the workforce, the Salary Survey arms you with the knowledge you need to negotiate the salary you deserve.  Visit www.asce.org/salaries

Younger Member News

ASCE Younger Members are your gateway to the civil engineering profession and a powerful networking community following graduation.

Loreen Choate Answers the Age Old Question: Is there life after my ASCE Chapter/Club?

Are you graduating this semester? Did you know there is life with ASCE after school? Your ASCE Student Chapter/Club was a great start, and, as you graduate,  ASCE can help you get established in the real world of civil engineering. Start by seeking out your local ASCE group wherever you are moving and get involved. What a great way to meet new people, participate in community service events, attend technical and professional presentations and attend social events!

There are a couple of ways to find out about your local ASCE Branch or Section. First, ask your practitioner advisor about the Branch/Section in the area where you have gotten a job so you are prepared when you get situated. Or, look up the information on the ASCE Web site by going to www.asce.org, clicking on Regions/Sections/Branches, and using the handy map to find the place you are moving. Most Branches/Sections have Web sites with contact info, but if you do not find any information about the Younger Members in that group, I encourage you to e-mail the President of that Section or Branch and ask them about the Younger Member group. Even if you don’t get involved with the Younger Member activities, the local Branches and Sections also provide great opportunities for a working civil engineer. My advice, Stay Involved!

Not sure if your local Branch or Section has a Younger Member Group, check out the following Web site, www.asce.org/inside/cym_contacts.cfm#online. Still not sure, feel free to contact me at asceymf@earthlink.net.

Conferences, Competitions & Publications

Shake hands with industry colleagues, open doors to new professional opportunities, exchange ideas with fellow students, and stay on the cutting-edge of industry trends.  ASCE conferences and publications are more than your gateway to specialty technical information.
