ASCE and The History Channel® Join Forces to Discover an Inventor!
John Roebling may be best known as the civil engineer behind the Brooklyn Bridge, but he also invented a twisted wire-rope cable that revolutionized bridge building and earned his place as the first civil engineer in the National Inventors Hall of Fame. To honor innovative men and women (such as Roebling) whose inventions have advanced the field of civil engineering, ASCE has partnered with The History Channel and Invent Now®, Inc. to find the nation's next great invention idea. The winning entry in the Modern Marvels Invent Now Challenge will win a $25,000 grant and be named the "2006 Modern Marvel of the Year."
This new program is presented by The History Channel and Invent Now, Inc., a division of the National Inventors Hall of Fame® Foundation, and in partnership with Time Magazine and ASCE. Share your Big Idea.

ASCE's 2005 Online Student Survey officially ended yesterday. An analysis of the survey will appear in the January Student e-News. Your participation will help us to better deliver value to all our members and guide future initiatives. Thank you to all those who participated.

How service oriented is your Student Chapter? Earlier this year, Engineers Without Borders (EWB) surveyed 70 Sections, Branches and Younger Member Groups to tabulate their involvement in Voluntary Community Service activities. Thirty-eight groups responded that they participate in Student Outreach, the most of any other service program offered in the survey. The Concrete Canoe/Steel Bridge Competition pooled the second highest number with 32, while Scholarship fundraising came right behind with 29. Only 12 reported they had not participated in any of the programs on the survey. EWB partners with developing communities to improve their quality of life through implementation of environmentally, equitable, and economically sustainable engineering projects, while developing internationally responsible engineers and engineering students. For more information on EWB, visit www.ewb-usa.org.
Get involved in public policy with ASCE's Key Contacts Program. Key Contacts receive the weekly newsletter This Week in Washington, providing the latest information on legislative and regulatory developments impacting civil engineering. In addition, you can send your federal or state representative a message on current civil engineering legislation, learn about issues and bills affecting civil engineering that are active in Congress and your state legislature and track how your U.S. Representative and Senators voted on key ASCE bills. Become a Key Contact by completing an enrollment form or for more information, visit www.asce.org/pressroom/publicpolicy/keycont.cfm.
"All too few girls consider engineering as a career, and the profession is poorer for it," according to Resources, a publication of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. However, Patricia Galloway, Ph.D, P.E., F.ASCE and past president of ASCE has a plan. Galloway is heading the Extraordinary Women Engineers Project, a program that will combat the declining trend of university enrollment of female engineering students. One of Galloway's many aims is to "make the general public, especially girls, aware of the importance of engineering in everyday life." The project is set to launch early next year. Read More.

The University of Louisville is combining recruiting with community service initiatives. Louisville's membership count topped 100 members at the end of October and continues to grow. In addition, the Chapter has embraced the call to be guardians of the public good. Led by their 2005-2006 Officers, Louisville has begun work at Cathedral of the Assumption's soup kitchen, weatherproofing houses with Project Warm and, over the summer, helped complete the Wilson Stream Creek Restoration Project in the Bernheim Forest. Look for more details in the online version of December's ASCE News.
