Younger Member News

ASCE Younger Members are your gateway to the civil engineering profession and a powerful networking community following graduation.

The Houston Younger Member Group Sets the Example
By Tom Stiles, EIT, M.ASCE

January 1 marked another great year for the ASCE Houston Branch Younger Members (YM) Group. The Younger Member Group is comprised of young engineers in the greater Houston area who are 35 and under. The Houston Branch YM Group was awarded the 2006 Large Younger Member Group at the National Conference in Chicago.

Like other ASCE Younger Member Groups across the nation, we provide engineers the opportunity to meet new, fun, and proactive peers within the civil engineering profession. We also help guide students and young engineers in their career paths as well as volunteer in the community that we live in and work for on a daily basis.  Throughout the year, the YM Group plans and sponsors career development events, which typically give advice and strategies to help you advance your career and become a successful and respected engineer.  As young engineers, we gather for a variety of fun events including group camping trips, bowling, dominoes tournaments, professional sports games, and monthly social gatherings.

As a student, I encourage you to find your local YM Group and make use of the opportunities it provides. Aside from having fun with other engineers your age, the YM Group can help you build strong connections and friendships within the civil engineering profession. Further, your local YM Group may provide you with the knowledge and training to ensure you become a successful engineer early in your career. Remember, the friends you make today may be the peers you will conduct business with in the future.

Younger Members are those ASCE members who are 35-years-old and younger. Your local ASCE Branch or Section probably has an active Younger Member Group. Younger Member Groups across the country participate in community service events, technical seminars, and social activities. Getting involved with your local group while still a student will help you to make contacts that could help you with getting an internship or job after graduation.

Not sure if your local Branch or Section has a Younger Member Group, check out the following Web site, www.asce.org/inside/cym_contacts.cfm#online. Still not sure, feel free to contact Loreen Choate at asceymf@earthlink.net.
