ASCE Younger Members are your gateway to the civil engineering profession and a powerful networking community following graduation.
You Control Your Career Path
By Eric Fisher, P.E., M.ASCE
Central Geographic Member – Committee on Younger Members

My parents once told me that time goes by faster as you get older. I’m proving this theory to be true as each day passes. Opportunities for personal growth lurk at each fork in the road. You may ask how many forks in the road exist, and this will depend on how much you “eat.”
Civil engineers are hungry for knowledge by nature. This knowledge is applied to solve issues that affect the safety and welfare of the public. Avenues to obtain knowledge include reading and watching the news, but the best way to learn is hands-on. Knowing how to figure the forces acting on a beam will help design the beam, but you always need to see how this beam transfers energy through the entire structure.
The same theory applies to your career path. Early in your career, you will be given assignments to solve individual tasks of a given project. How you handle the early design tasks shows your supervisor how you may be able to handle increased responsibility on bigger projects.
To accelerate your career path, take time to involve yourself in professional societies. Professional societies such as ASCE offer opportunities to enhance your management skills. You will be given opportunities to organize events, hold meetings, give presentations, and network. I’m lucky to have friends all across the U.S. as a result of my involvement with ASCE’s Committee on Younger Members (CYM).
You control your career path. The more involvement you have in your projects at work and professional organizations after work will expedite your career growth. If you can learn how to motivate volunteers to reach goals in their free time, you can motivate anyone receiving a paycheck.
Younger Members are those ASCE members who are 35-years-old and younger. Your local ASCE Branch or Section probably has an active Younger Member Group. Younger Member Groups across the country participate in community service events, technical seminars, and social activities. Getting involved with your local group while still a student will help you to make contacts that could help you with getting an internship or job after graduation.
The Younger Member Groups around the country are under the Committee on Younger Members (CYM), which is the national ASCE committee representing members age 35 and under.
Not sure if your local Branch or Section has a Younger Member Group, check out the following Web site, www.asce.org/inside/cym_contacts.cfm#online. Still not sure, feel free to contact Loreen Choate at asceymf@earthlink.net.
