ASCE eLearning Series Episode 1: Career Paths in Civil Engineering

Do you ever wonder what career path you would follow to become a corporate chief executive officer, a public works director, a professor, or a project manager? Every engineer’s path is as different as their interests and skills. The challenge is channeling those to the career path that’s right for you. It could mean the difference between a mediocre position and your dream job.

Join ASCE for the free online workshop, “Career Paths in Civil Engineering.” Hosted by JP Mohsen on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 7:30 p.m., you’ll discover the five main civil engineering career paths, the elements of each, and how you can transition from one to the next.

Whether you’re preparing to graduate or still feeling your way through the early stages of your major, ASCE’s first eLearning online workshop will help put you on the right career path.

ASCE Develops Speakers Network for Guiding Principles for the Nation’s Critical Infrastructure - Plus Free Download

What happens when a critical infrastructure system fails, as was the case in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina?  It can severely endanger public safety, health, and welfare as well as the economy of a region or nation. ASCE has developed a network of speakers who will come to your Student Chapter to explain the importance of planning, funding, design, and construction that will help eliminate future infrastructure projects from failing.

>>Download ASCE's free report "Guiding Principles for the Nation's Critical Infrastructure" to understand ASCE's framework for assessing the effectiveness, adaptability, and resilience of critical infrastructure systems.

>>Request a speaker for your chapter by contacting Laurie Hanson.

ASCE’s F.E. Exam Review Course is The Ultimate Preparation Tool for the F.E. Exam

The F.E. exam is tough! The best way to prepare for this day-long exam is to study the relevant materials and then Practice! Practice! Practice! ASCE's F.E. Refresher Course contains 12 modules, presented by a “virtual instructor,” using interactive quizzes, audio, and animated slides. Listen and watch just as you would in the classroom. At the end of each section, test your skills. Time yourself on practice tests, which can be taken over and over again, to sharpen test-taking skills right up to the exam. The practice tests are immediately scored so you can monitor your progress and measure your improvement. The course is available for a one-year subscription on both CD-Rom and online.

Younger Member News

I’m going to Kansas City… Kansas City here I come!

Marie Maly, P.E., M.ASCE
Central Geographic Member – Committee on Younger Members
marie.asce@gmail.com

“I’m going to Kansas City, Kansas City here I come….” Perhaps you’re a little young to remember everyone from Wilbert Harrison (the original) to Little Richard singing about Kansas City. Maybe you don’t know the Beatles were “… going to Kansas City, going to get my baby back home.” It’s possible you haven’t seen the musical Oklahoma!, where Will tells everyone that, “ev’rything’s up to date in Kansas City; they’ve gone about as fur as they c’n go!” (As “far as they can go” includes a skyscraper seven stories high, twenty gas buggies, and radiators!)

Whether or not you are very knowledgeable about music and lyrics that have been sung since before you were born, I encourage you to take a train, take a plane, or walk to ASCE’s Annual Conference this Oct. 29-31. It will be held at the Kansas City Marriott Downtown. If you get in early, try the Arrowhead/Kauffman Stadiums tour on Wednesday afternoon. Otherwise, kick off your conference experience with the Welcome Breakfast and Orientation, especially for students, on Thursday morning. Thursday evening, join other students and Younger Member attendees at our joint social, “ASCE Unplugged,” as we invade the College Basketball Experience. Whether you are a casual, hardcore, or marginal fan, this interactive experience is bound to be fun. I look forward to attending!

You will have the opportunity to attend conference sessions, meet other students/young civil engineers and potential employers at networking socials and meals, and participate in the Annual Business Meeting. The Kansas City Section Younger Members have put together a special panel discussion on Friday afternoon about the transitions we face early in our careers. This is one not to miss! You can follow up with some pre-Halloween fun at the ASCE Theme Party. Dress as your “favorite mobster or dame” to eat some of the great Kansas City BBQ at the American Jazz and Negro Leagues Baseball Museums (two museums in one). At the conclusion of general conference sessions on Saturday morning, the students will again have a specific series of activities – from resume writing and interviewing tips to lunch and technical tours. If all of this sounds great to you, find more information and register here.

The Committee on Younger Members (CYM) will be in Kansas City for the Annual Conference and the Younger Member Leadership Symposium (which will be held on Saturday). We look forward to meeting lots of student members at regular sessions and the special events. Don’t be afraid to ask us questions – we love to help Student Members and get them in contact with Younger Members in their area. See you in the City of Fountains!

The Committee on Younger Members (CYM) is the national ASCE committee representing members age 35 and under. We work with Younger Member Groups and Forums around the country to provide professional, technical, service, and social opportunities geared toward the newer members of our profession. Find your local Section or Branch Younger Member Group. There are many groups, and we may not have links for all of them, so if you don’t see yours – or you are not sure which Section or Branch you’re in – feel free to contact me, Marie Maly at marie.asce@gmail.com
