What does your résumé say about you?

Your résumé is more than just words on paper. In fact, in today's world of online applications, it's one of the most important tools that you, as a job or internship seeker, can possess. Your résumé will cause a potential employer to decide, in seconds, whether you'll be called for an interview or filed away forever. Apply these tips from ASCE's Career Connections to your résumé:

  • Be Concise – Present an accurate and sharp account of your qualifications. Ensure that it’s neat, professional, and easy to read.
  • Stand Out! – Customize your résumé to stand out by taking the time to tailor it to specific jobs and companies.
  • Unlock Keywords – Examine the job listing for keywords and phrases, then insert them where applicable in your resume.
  • Actions Speak Louder – Use bullet points that begin with colorful, action verbs like “spearheaded” or “championed,” rather than “managed” or “ran.”
  • Keep it Clean – Craft your résumé in one to two pages, using boldface or all-capital letters for headings. Avoid dense paragraphs of information.

Once you've polished your résumé, post it on Career Connections for no charge. Hundreds of employers are actively searching for students just like you to fill positions and internships. Jumpstart your civil engineering career today.

Younger Member Groups: Get Involved Now

By Michelle Everett, P.E., M.ASCE

Last week I was helping cook dinner with my Young Member (YM) Group at our local Ronald McDonald House when I overhead a conversation. A recent graduate was volunteering with our group and started talking to one of our newer members. During the conversation, she mentioned that she was job hunting, which we all know can be a challenge in this economy, and he immediately set her up with a number to call for an opening in his firm. Later I was talking about what I overheard with another member of our group and she told me she had recently passed on a résumé from a student from our local university to her boss, and the student had just started an internship at her company. I couldn’t help but think that these stories represent what ASCE and its Younger Member Groups are all about. Local YM Groups across the country are regularly providing opportunities for their members to network with one another while participating in socials, community service events, sports teams or other activities - and students are always welcome!

I encourage you to find your local YM Group and make use of the opportunities they provide. You could even let the local YM Group know you are interested in a joint activity with your Student Chapter. Suggest a social that everyone in your group can attend, such as bowling or even a camping trip! Aside from having fun with other engineers your age, the YM Group can help you build strong connections and friendships within the civil engineering profession.

The Committee on Younger Members (CYM) is the national ASCE committee representing members age 35 and under. We work with Younger Member Groups and Forums around the country to provide professional, technical, service, and social opportunities geared toward the newer members of our profession. Find your local Section or Branch Younger Member Group.
