Younger Member Ken Maschke Tells You How to "Find a Job and Keep it in 2008"

This past month, Ken's been a busy guy, but fortunate for us, he's kept a record of it. Find out what Ken has to say about finding -- and keeping -- a job in 2008, what he did on his summer vacation...in San Juan, and how ASCE has become a leading voice for infrastructure...and how you can make sure yours is heard too.

Nominations are being solicited for the 2009 O. H. Ammann Research Fellowship in Structural Engineering, which is bestowed annually to a member for the purpose of encouraging the creation of new knowledge in the field of structural design and construction. The O. H. Ammann Fellowship was endowed in 1963 by O. H. Ammann, Hon.M.ASCE, and was increased in 1985 by Klary V. Ammann (widow of O. H. Ammann). Want to Become a Geo-Professional? Form Your Own Graduate Student Organization

Graduate students at any U.S. college or university, who are also individual student members of the Geo-Institute, are encouraged to form a Graduate Student Organization (GSO) at their university.

Members of GSOs must be active student members of the Geo-Institute. There are no dues requirements for GSOs. The GSO is, however, permitted to engage in appropriate activities to raise funds to support its activities.

Each GSO faculty advisor receives a GSO Membership Certificate and an appointment letter signed by the President of the Geo-Institute. The Geo-Institute Board, or its designated representative committee, may organize activities for student organizations at specialty conferences, ASCE annual conventions, or elsewhere, that involve paper competitions, professional education and similar activities. The Geo-Institute will have a link from its homepage to the GSO's homepage.

The function of local GSOs is the enhancement of the education of students who are preparing to become geo-professionals. These organizations engage in activities of their choice as long as such activities do not violate the code of ethics of the Geo-Institute.

Career Resources

Get Involved and Get Connected

Dr. Michael Casey, M.ASCE, an Assistant Professor and the advisor for the George Mason University Chapter of ASCE, knows “you need to be involved in order to reap the benefits of ASCE.”

Student Chapters offer something for everyone. Casey explains that civil engineering “students enjoy civic responsibility, care about the environment, service learning, sustainability, and volunteering.”

Student Chapter networking opportunities include career fairs, guest speakers, community clean-up, and annual trips.

On a national level, students can participate in the National Concrete Canoe Competition, and the National Student Steel Bridge Competition. Student conferences are another great way to network with peers while applying your creativity and leadership skills. (Hint – don’t forget to ask about discounted conference registration and fees for students).

Once you become involved, you never know where your connections will lead. From internships, scholarships and job opportunities, you will always be ready with the help of Career Connections. Career Connections assists students searching for internship opportunities, posting resumes, and career advice in one easy-to-use location. Visit ASCE Career Connections to start building your network and get connected today!

>>Next month, Part 5 of this series will help you begin researching companies and preparing your resume!

ASCE's 138th Annual Civil Engineering Conference: Bringing Students and Younger Members Together

Andrés Roda, P.E., M.ASCE
NJASCE@comcast.net
Coordination and International Member – Committee on Younger Members

The ASCE 138th Annual Civil Engineering Conference was held Nov. 6-8 when nearly 1,000 members from across the globe met in Pittsburgh, PA. More than 400 ASCE members attended the Technical and Leadership Development event, over a third of the attendees were Student and Younger Members. Two key events geared toward developing young engineers’ leadership skills and networking included the Younger Member Leadership Symposium (YMLS) and the Younger Member-Student Member Interaction.

The YMLS provided an opportunity to meet and network with young engineers across the nation. The event was also focused on honing leadership skills through the development of communication skills and ethics. The meeting included a presentation by this year’s Daniel W. Mead Award Winner Matthew Swenty, P.E., M.ASCE from the Virginia Section, Roanoke Branch titled, “Is it ethical for an engineer to participate in a project they consider to be poor public policy/not in the public’s best interest?” The presentation focused on the ethics of participating in public projects and the importance of responding to questionable projects/policies as an engineering leader. The Younger Members responded well to the lively presentation and were treated to an award winning topic.

The Younger Member / Student interaction event was held at the Carnegie Science Center. Students and Younger Members had an opportunity to share experiences and ideas with one another while enjoying the many fun, interesting and exciting experiments of the museum just outside of Heinz Field. Whether it was rumbling on the earthquake simulator or spinning on the human-sized gyroscope; Younger Members and Students had a great night while spending valuable time forming relationships and ties invaluable to their careers.

Students also benefited from attending sessions such as "How to Find the Perfect Job," "Life Balance," and "ASCE: What's In It For Me?".  Attendees also had a chance to ask the profession's leading CEOs questions about how they fit into the workforce of the future, and just how employers are planning to retain them.

Mark your calendar for next year’s 139th Annual Civil Engineering Conference and Young Member Leadership Symposium held in Kansas City, October 29-31, 2009. Whether you will be a Student Member or Younger Member at that time, I encourage you to attend this great conference as it will offer many networking and learning opportunities.

The Younger Member Groups around the country are under the Committee on Younger Members (CYM), which is the national ASCE committee representing members age 35 and under.

Not sure if your local Branch or Section has a Younger Member Group? Find out here. Still not sure? Feel free to contact Loreen Choate at asceymf@earthlink.net.
