Capital Branch of Nevada Section Joins Forces with Carson City School District for Outreach Programs

The Capital Branch of the Nevada Section is excited and proud to be involved with the Carson City School District in its fourth annual West Point Bridge Design Competition and its second annual Futuristic Cities Program.  Each year’s bridge competition has involved a minimum of four local middle schools and will this year also involve high school students.  The Futuristic Cities Program has scaled down the “Future Cities” guidelines in an effort to cater to elementary school students.  Last year’s event was a huge success, involving two local elementary schools and over 50 students…promoting participation over competition.

These Capital Branch efforts, spearheaded by Joe Cacioppo, P.E. (Past President of the Capital Branch, current Nevada Section Treasurer, and Vice-President of Resource Concepts, Inc., a local civil engineering and resource management firm) aim to introduce civil engineering to elementary and middle school students.  The thought is that if we wait until high school, many students already have career paths in mind.

The Capital Branch offers cash prizes for the bridge competition’s first, second and third place teams of each participating school.  Each first place team then competes in a proctored final competition where the grand prize winning team is awarded an additional cash prize.  All participants are awarded certificates.  The Futuristic Cities program is not a contest.  All participants receive a certificate for their participation.  The schools are already inquiring about this year’s events!

Volunteers Needed! Let's Make a Difference in Chicago!

The ASCE Committee on Volunteer Community Service, the Illinois Section, and Rebuilding Together®, an organization devoted to revitalizing houses for low-income homeowners, proudly announce their fourth annual community service event at the Annual Conference.

This year we will be working with the Valentine Boys and Girls Club to make a difference for youth in Chicago.  Our goal is to improve the functionality and appearance of the Club.  The work scope includes painting, replacing ceiling and floor tiles, removing cabinets, and repairing library book shelves.

The Valentine Boys and Girls Club is located at 3400 South Emerald Avenue in Chicago, Illinois and serves over 2,000 members annually.  The mission of the club is to enable all young people to reach their full potential as productive, caring, and responsible citizens.  Programs at the Valentine Boys and Girls Club include an after school program, homework help, computers, arts and crafts, sports, swimming, exercise, tutoring, mentoring, prevention/intervention programs, and daycare.

Important facts you need to know:

  • Where:  Valentine Boys and Girls Club, 3400 South Emerald Avenue, Chicago, IL
  • Date:  Sun. Oct. 22
  • Time:  7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Region at a Glance-REGION 9

Prepared by Carl L. Blum, P.E., F.ASCE

Chair – Region 9 Board of Governors

As  part of ASCE’s recent Governance Restructuring,  9 Domestic Regions were created (Replacing 4 Zones and 15 Districts).  Region 9 (California) was formed on Oct. 26, 2005.  This is a brief report on the progress made during this first year of organization and operations.

Region 9 is governed by a seven-member Board of Governors.  During this first year it was made up of three existing National Directors (John Pulver, P.E., Karl Longley, P.E. and Carl Blum P.E. – the Chair for the first year), and four Governors representing the four Sections in California (Chuck Spinks, P.E. – San Diego, Mike Thornton, P.E. – Los Angeles, Jennifer Epp, P.E. – Sacramento,  Larry Pulley P.E. – San Francisco).

We met on a monthly basis, with three of the meetings being face to face and the others being Conference Calls.  We continued two efforts that were already in existence from the former CASCE (California Society of Civil Engineers). CASCE was basically a coordinating group comprised of one representative from each of California’s four Sections.

The efforts continued with a Disaster Response preparedness team (i.e. ASCE members trained and ready to help during disasters here in California) and an annual ASCE Legislative Day at the State Capitol.

We significantly expanded a state level awards program, prepared a Report Card on the states Infrastructure, set up committees to look into better ways to serve all 17,00 ASCE members in California and to explore the possibility of having a Region 9 Annual Conference.

We set up a Region 9 Web site (www.region9.asce.org), put together a comprehensive roster that will include all Region 9, Section ,Branch, YMF and Student Chapter leaders, National Committee members who live in Region 9, and Institute leaders who live in Region 9.

We began what will be an ongoing liaison with the State Board of Registration, established a policy for helping fund State Historical Civil Engineering Monuments, and are working on guidelines to better coordinate with National conferences and seminars that are held here in Region 9.

During our Legislative Day at the State Capitol in February, we pushed for Infrastructure funding to address the deteriorating and inadequate infrastructure in our state. We recently studied and passed resolutions supporting the Infrastructure Funding measures on our state’s November ballot.

The first elected Region 9 Governor (Mark Creveling, P.E. –San Diego Section) and the first “At-Large” Appointed Governor (Harvey Gobas. P.E.) were chosen.  They will replace Chuck Spinks, P.E. and Carl Blum, P.E. on the Board of Governors.  John Pulver, P.E. will take over as chair for 2006-07 and Larry Pulley, P.E. will be the Vice Chair.

With the help of two members from the ASCE National Task Committee on Strategic Planning (Blaine Leonard. P.E. and Don Sepulveda. P.E.), our past National President (Bob Bein, P.E.) and two of our Sections In-coming Presidents (John Morris, P.E – Los Angeles, and David Schwegel, P.E.- Sacramento),  we looked into the future and developed the highest priority issues on which we will focus in the next five years.

This “first year” Board of Governors has worked hard to help bridge the gap between ASCE National and the local Sections and Branches.  With more of “the action” taking place “closer to home”,  all 17,000+ ASCE members in Region 9 should have a better sense of the great value that ASCE membership brings to the civil engineering profession and through their profession to their individual careers.

Section/Branch Membership Retention/FTP Tip

Section and Branch officers have access to FTP data on new members. Use this data to contact new members, welcoming them to ASCE and your Section or Branch:

  • Send a “welcome” e-mail, letter or postcard.
  • Explain the benefits of membership in your Section or Branch.
  • Invite them to your next meeting, program or activity.
  • Introduce new members who attend meetings, programs or activities.

Remember – members won’t automatically renew their membership each year – they need to see the value of being an ASCE Section or Branch member!

For more information on the FTP data, contact Michael Cook at 703.295.6121 or mcook@asce.org.

Calls for Expressions of Interest in Building Envelope Issues

The Architectural Engineering Institute of ASCE (AEI) is exploring the level of interest in building envelope issues among the general ASCE membership.  In locations where a significant level of interest exists, AEI is considering starting local Architectural Engineering groups in cooperation with the ASCE Sections and Branches. AEI would appreciate it very much if Section and Branch Presidents could find out the level of interest in such topics among their members. If a reasonable level of interest exists, please contact Amar Chaker, Director of AEI at achaker@asce.org.
