Volume 7, Number 3 Fall 2005
A Timely Read
Have you read any good books lately? The devastation of Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita brought feelings of empathy from all of us. The focus on flooding in New Orleans, however, probably also peaked the interest of many of us from a professional standpoint. As engineers or scientists in the water resources field, we always want to know more about the how and the why of a particular situation. This brings me back to my initial question.
John M. Barry’s Rising Tide tells many stories about the Mississippi River and its relationship with our nation through a historical account of the Great Flood of 1927. The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 was one of America’s greatest natural disasters, and it served as a catalyst for change in many aspects of our country. From an engineering perspective, the book provides insight into the river system and those who brought about the idea of controlling it with a system of levees. From a historical perspective, the book chronicles changes to politics, social structure, and race relations in the 19th and 20th centuries.
So take some time out of your busy schedule and check out Rising Tide by John M. Barry. I think you will find it to have an interesting perspective in light of recent events.
