Inaugural International Conference of the Engineering Mechanics Institute (EM08) EM08 will feature nearly 500 technical presentations in up to twelve concurrent sessions over three full days, with participants from 34 countries. These technical presentations cover a wide range of the branches of mechanics including: computational mechanics, inverse problems, risk analysis for a wide range of engineered systems, probabilistic mechanics, structural reliability, geomechanics, granular materials, control and health monitoring of civil structures, the mechanics of pavements and paving materials, bridge engineering, fatigue and fracture, solid mechanics, and fluid mechanics. In addition to the these traditional areas, mini-symposia have been organized on novel topics including the Multi-scale Behavior of Damage and Failure Mechanics, mechanics of biologically inspired materials, cardiovascular fluid mechanics, and the interaction of fluid flow and biota. Keynote presentations will be given by James Rice, Ted Belytschko, Christian Soize, Mory Gharib, Steve Cowin, and Phil Liu. For more information about EM08, please consult the conference web page at http://www.ce.umn.edu/em08 which includes the detailed preliminary program of the conference. On-line registration is open. Report on the Inaugural Meeting of the EMI Board The EMI Board of Governors held its inaugural meeting on October 19, 2007 at the ASCE headquarters in Reston, Virginia. The Board appointed Alex Cheng as Vice-President and George Voyiadjis as Treasurer. The Board decided to carry over the EMD committee structure to EMI. The committee chairs will be invited to meet with the Board at the May meeting. The committees will be invited to submit a report providing details of their activities (papers, symposia, member participation, etc.). A Nominations and Elections Committee was added for future needs, and a Bylaws Committee was also added to look at bylaws issues and make recommendations on how to progress to the bylaws originally proposed for EMI. Members may propose new task committees which will be created for a limited duration and may be provided with limited funding. The New Initiatives Committee will serve as the incubator of the task committees.
Invitation to take part in the activities of EMI’s Technical Committees EMI currently has 13 technical committees working on a wide range of topics. A list of these committees may be found at the following url: http://www.engmechinstitute.org/TechDiv.html. Links to committee pages that list the purpose of each committee and provide the name and e-mail address of the committee chair are provided. EMI members interested in participating in the activities of these committees are encouraged to contact the committee chairs.
ASCE Releases 2nd Edition of the Body of Knowledge ASCE has released the second edition of the Body of Knowledge. In this new report, Civil Engineering Body of Knowledge for the 21st Century - Preparing the Civil Engineer for the Future, many of the original concepts and ideas have been clarified and sharpened, and their implementation will lead to the revision of current undergraduate and post-undergraduate education. The full report can be downloaded here.
The latest bylaws of ASCE created the Technical Region which is comprised of the eight Institutes. This change enables a major component of ASCE to be represented within the Board of Direction by two elected Technical Region Directors: Stan R. Caldwell, P.E., F.AEI, F.ASCE and Thomas M. Rachford, PhD., P.E., F.ASCE. They regularly report to their constituents, the members of the Institutes, on matters discussed by the ASCE Board of Direction. Their latest report can be found here.
EMI Members wishing to publish in the EMI newsletter announcements of interest to the EMI membership should send a draft of the proposed text to Professor Boris Jeremic, Editor of the EMI newsletter.
