As my year as COPRI President draws to a close, I am grateful for the opportunities I have had to work with committees, meet members, and further the work of the Institute. Navigation Engineering Webinar to Debut In January
Plan to be online from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. on January 20 to learn more about navigation engineering, a specialty which involves the maintenance of our nation's navigable waterways. Key issues involve the need to focus on life cycle planning and implementation of navigation engineering practices that are ethical and environmentally sustainable. Watching a kid's face light up as they learn from your experience the important contributions engineers make. ASCE's Pre-College Outreach program would like to add to these rewards. By simply filling out ASCE's first online questionnaire for outreach volunteers, ASCE will enter you into a drawing to win an iPod Classic! The Pre-College Outreach program is soliciting member feedback to get a better picture of the scope of pre-college outreach volunteerism around the country. Your answers will provide information about member outreach activities and help ASCE strengthen its network of volunteers. Take the survey today! Responses will be accepted through September 30, 2009. Members who complete the entire survey will be entered in a drawing to receive an iPod Classic pre-loaded with the full season of Design Squad videos to help inspire your next educational outreach event. Memoirs of deceased members are published in ASCE's annual publication "Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers". Friends or colleagues can acknowledge a recently deceased ASCE member by submitting memoirs to us. The deadline for submission for the 2009 Transaction is December 20th. PIANC Plans Seminar: Navigation and the Environment – International Perspectives and Gulf of Mexico Applicability

The National Engineers Week Foundation has announced the launch of its New Faces of Engineering recognition program for 2010. New Faces of Engineering highlights the interesting and unique work of young engineers age 30 and under, and the positive impact they are making in the world. One individual from ASCE, as well as one from each of the Foundation’s sponsoring engineering societies, will be selected by the EWEEK Diversity Committee as their discipline’s “New Face.” All of the selected engineers will be featured in a full-page ad in USA TODAY during Engineers Week, Feb. 14 - 20, 2010. Pre-College Outreach Taps into Social Media to Boost Volunteer Engagement
ASCE’s Pre-College Outreach program is inviting volunteers to its new online volunteer center where they can learn more about pre-college outreach, take advantage of social media tools, and get connected with others engaged in this fun and important educational initiative. Links to ASCE’s Pre-College Outreach Facebook group, and FlickR album are located at the site giving members an opportunity to upload photos, join discussions and share information relating to pre-college outreach activities. In addition, visitors to the site will be able to read short clips about outreach champions and events providing insights to outreach activities around the country.
