COPRI to Form Disaster Assessment Oversight Committee With the 2006 hurricane season just beginning, the COPRI Governing Board recently decided to form a permanent disaster assessment team oversight committee. Over the last 18 months COPRI sent teams of experts to assess natural disasters across the globe, including the Indian Ocean Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina. By establishing a standing team of experts with assessment experience, COPRI will be able to mobilize quickly to have investigators on the ground when Mother Nature strikes. MEMBER UPDATES

COPRI member Edward F. Thompson, Ph.D., P.E., has been awarded the 2006 ERDC Research and Development Achievement Award by the Army Corp’s Engineer Research and Development Center. This award was bestowed to Ed and collaborator, as well as fellow COPRI member, Dr. Jeffrey Melby in recognition of their research on a new time-based empirical simulation method for determining least-cost coastal structure designs. This research provides new insight into the life-cycle response of structures that will improve the analytical capability... America’s Energy Coast Economic Forum Focuses on Coastal Restoration Dominic Izzo, P.E. The COPRI Deepwater Infrastructure Forum (DIF) held its first meeting of the year on April 11th. The theme for 2006 is “Contracting Strategies for Deepwater Projects”. The first meeting of the series discussed different contract types and a project scenario was presented. Participants, assuming the role of owner, filled out contract quilts to show their preference for how to contract and then discussed their choices. Participants will have the opportunity to play the role of contractor in a follow-up meeting...
