General damages caused by direct wave impact and by scour around foundations, Phuket, Thailand.

COPRI commissioned post-tsunami

assessment trips to India, Sri Lanka and Thailand.  Unlike our Technical Council on Lifeline and Earthquake Engineering (TCLEE) partners in this effort, this is the first post-disaster effort undertaken by COPRI.  Our mission: to learn what we could from the devastating tsunami impacts for the sake of those who must make informed decisions when planning to avoid future tsunami damages and loss of life.  Our limited work is no substitute for that of local experts in each ...

Deepwater Infrastruture Forum Sets Off For The Cold Regions

slide2

This year’s topic of COPRI's Houston Deepwater Infrastructure Forum (DIF) is "Challenges of the Cold Regions."  The first meeting was held on February 8, 2005, and focused on geotechnical issues that affect design and construction of facilities in cold regions. These include permafrost, earthquake analysis and design of arctic platforms, and field operations...

COMMITTEE AND MEMBER UPDATES

Ports and Harbors Committee Develops Timber Structures Protection Manual
By Alex Matlin, P.E., and Andrew Cairns, P.E.

Due to implementation of strict environmental regulations, U.S. coastal waters that were polluted for many years have become clean, resulting in the return of marine borers, which attack timber structures and are threatening the integrity of existing timber piers and docks.  As a result, protection and repair of timber structures have become a big and still growing business in U.S. ports and harbors...

Izzo to Chair Wetlands and Sediment Management Committee

Call For Members

At its last meeting, the COPRI governing Board approved a recommendation to establish a Wetlands and Sediment Management Committee to replace the Wetlands and River Restoration Committee. The purpose of the Committee will be to study and disseminate information on techniques for wetland restoration, creation, protection and management and for managing sediments in or removed from coastal or inland projects. Techniques will consider...

Civil Engineers Announce New Seismic Standard for Piers and Wharves

Call For Members

In 2002, a labor dispute shut down ports along the west coast, an action that ultimately impacted businesses across the nation. Due to the proximity of many of these ports to fault lines, effects from damage caused by a major earthquake would have even greater regional and national impacts. In response to that threat, COPRI established a committee focused on developing a new standard for seismic design of piers and wharves...

Make a Difference: Join COPRI's Membership Committee

Mike Hemsley, P.E.

COPRI would like to welcome Tetra Tech, Inc., COPRI’s newest Supporting Organizational Member.  Tetra Tech, and it’s more than 8000 employees located both in the United States and internationally, provide services to commercial and government clients.  Tetra Tech's services include research and development, applied science and technology, engineering design, program management, construction management, and operations and maintenance.

The COPRI Membership Committee needs additional volunteers to help expand our institute.  The committee’s foremost achievement in 2004 was the creation of the organizational membership categories...

In Remembrance

AMERICA'S CRUMBLING INFRASTRUCTURE ERODING QUALITY OF LIFE

Traffic congestion and our children's overcrowded schools are daily reminders that the state of our nation's infrastructure directly affects our econwaterways iconomy and quality of life. The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) just released its 2005 Report Card for America's Infrastructure - assigning a cumulative grade of D for the nation's infrastructure.  The 2005 Report Card assesses the same 12 infrastructure categories as in 2001, in addition to three new categories - public parks and recreation, rail and security...

Trend of Neglect Hurting America's Economy and Environment: Coalition Focuses Efforts on Water and Environmental Infrastructure

On March 10, 2005, a coalition of water and environmental infrastructure groups gathered on Capitol Hill to launch a united effort to reverse the trend of neglect that is threatening America's economy and ecology. The level of federal support of the nation's water resources infrastructure has dwindled. From waterways to ports, to beaches, to wetlands and estuaries, to water quality and the health of the oceans, the priority given to dealing with the needs of our water resources is too low. The consequences of this neglect are already evident across the country...

ASCE Comments on Inland Waterways Trust Fund, Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund, and Beach Nourishment Program to Congress

On March 18, 2005, ASCE submitted testimony before the Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development on the FY’06 budget for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.  ASCE urged that Congress appropriate $1.979 billion for Corps of Engineers inland waterways programs in FY 2006, the same as the president's request. ASCE said that Congress should appropriate the entire balance of $307 million in the Inland Waterways Trust Fund and the entire current balance of $2.6 billion in the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund for critical infrastructure projects maintained and operated by the Corps. ASCE also recommended that Congress appropriate $49 million for beach nourishment investigations and construction in FY 2006, the full amount of the president's request.  To read the statement, go to: http://www.asce.org/files/pdf/pressroom/corpsofengineers2006.pdf
