Offshore Papers Honored at Gala Dinner
For over 35 years the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) has brought together engineers, scientists and other professionals from the offshore industry. Since the first conference in 1969, more than 10,000 papers have been presented at OTC. A few of these papers stand out as having provided the industry with innovation, direction and lasting impact on the design, construction or installation of the offshore infrastructure. Many of the OTC papers have straddled the divides to become an integral part of the design process of other categories of structures such as buildings and bridges... Is Navigation Engineering a Civil Engineering Niche or an Almost Invisible Multidisciplinary Specialty? A new COPRI Task Committee on Navigation is looking for your input. William McAnally, P.E. Chair To further the navigation engineering initiative, in 2005 the COPRI Waterways Committee created a Navigation Engineering Task Committee to define the specialty of navigation engineering; identify its practitioners, projects, literature, and resources; and recommend actions and provide products to improve the practice...
Billy Edge, Ph.D., P.E. There are many interesting changes going on within COPRI that will benefit us all. First off I would like to welcome the Tidal Hydraulics Committee to COPRI. For many years we have asked ourselves why the Tidal Hydraulics Committee was in EWRI and prior to that in the Hydraulics Division instead of the more coastal side of ASCE. It seemed at the time that the mold was just too hard to break. But with the opportunities for synergism, the temptation was no longer resistible... COMMITTEE AND MEMBER UPDATES
Dalrymple Elected to the National Academy of Engineering COPRI member Robert A. Dalrymple, Ph.D., P.E. was recently honored with election into the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). Election into the NAE is one of the highest professional honors in the engineering field. The distinction recognizes outstanding contributions to the engineering research, practice or education including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature and to the pioneering of new and significant fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering or developing and implementing innovative approaches to engineering education... Tidal Hydraulics Committee Moves to COPRI: New Members and Ideas Welcome By Andrew Kennedy, P.E. Recent events such as Hurricane Katrina have demonstrated the continuing relevance of engineering works in and around tidal waters, the general domain of the Tidal Hydraulics Committee (THC), which is one of the oldest committees within ASCE. During the ASCE reorganization which brought about the seven Institutes, the membership of the THC decided to align itself with the Environmental and Water Resources Institute (EWRI), but after some time it became clear that our purpose and interests were much closer to the work being done within COPRI. Because of this, the most recent committee meeting saw a unanimous vote to join COPRI... New COPRI Standards to Shake Up Pier and Wharf Design By Gayle Johnson, P.E. The Standards Committee on Seismic Design of Piers and Wharves has been hard at work since last summer, in an effort to create from scratch COPRI’s first Standards document. The committee hopes to have a document ready for public balloting in 2007. Because of the unique importance of soil behavior in pier and wharf seismic design compared to conventional building design, COPRI made a concentrated effort to include a significant amount of geotechnical engineers among the membership of nearly 40 professionals, as well as strong representation from East Coast engineers. For more information, contact committee chairman Gayle Johnson at gjohnson@hpa.com or Eileen Boeing of COPRI at eboeing@asce.org.
Member Spotlight: Subrata K. Chakrabarti, NAE, Ph.D, P.E., F. ASCE COPRI member Subrata K. Chakrabarti, NAE, Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE has been awarded the 2005 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Offshore, Ocean and Arctic Engineering (OOAE) Division of ASME International. The award is bestowed in recognition of his distinguished and significant lifetime contributions to the hydrodynamics and fluid-structure interactions in offshore and coastal structure design... Wetlands and Sediment Management Committee Keeps Busy with Many New Projects By Julie Dean Rosati, P.E. The Wetlands and Sediment Management Committee, chaired by Dominic Izzo, Vice President of the Marine Engineering Business Line, U.S. Gulf Coast, for DMJM Harris, Inc, currently has 31 members, with representation from engineering, environmental and ocean sciences, private industry, government, and academia. The committee has established six subcommittees: Beneficial Use of Dredged Material; Regional Sediment Management; Sediment Measurement; Information Resources, Needs, and Dissemination; Conference Planning; and Wetlands Engineering Guidelines...Technical Region Director’s Report By Stan Caldwell, P.E.
All members of the ASCE Board of Direction are expected to communicate effectively with the constituents in their respective regions. The Technical Region is a worldwide, virtual region comprised of ASCE’s seven Institutes. This report is the second in a series of brief summaries intended to keep you informed of the news from the ASCE Board of Direction. Communication is a two-way process...
