Univ. of Central Florida Professor Appointed COPRI Treasurer

Treasuer Scott Hagen

The Coasts, Oceans, Ports, and Rivers Institute (COPRI) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is pleased to announce the selection of a new Treasurer for its Board of Governors.

Scott C. Hagen, Ph.D., P.E., M.ASCE, is an associate professor in the University of Central Florida's Department of Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering. Hagen received his Ph.D. in 1998 from the University of Notre Dame, where he studied under Joannes J. Westerink. He earned a bachelor's in engineering with honors in Civil Engineering from the University of Iowa in 1993. A registered professional engineer in the state of Florida, Hagen has more than 10 years of extensive research, teaching and consulting experience. Scott will serve a two-year term as COPRI Treasurer beginning immediately.

Dr. Hagen’s main accomplishment at UCF has been to establish a research program in coastal hydroscience with focus on analysis, modeling and simulation of tidal hydrodynamics, including storm tides from hurricanes. To that end he envisioned, designed, funded, and serves as Director of the Coastal Hydroscience Analysis, Modeling, & Predictive Simulations laboratory (see http://champs.cecs.ucf.edu). Scott’s coastal hydroscience research program at UCF receives the majority of its funding from Federal sources, as well as state and local agencies, and private consultants. He was a key contributor to a National Oceanographic Partnership Program to develop a real-time forecasting system for winds, waves and storm surge.  Recent funding has resulted in a central role in the development of an ADCIRC model for the northwest coast of Florida to be implemented in FEMA flood mapping studies.

Dr. Hagen and his students have published their research in more than 60 journal articles and conference proceedings papers, including ASCE’s Journal of Waterway, Port, Coastal and Ocean Engineering. His proudest achievement is the graduation of 12 Masters and two Ph.D. students.

In addition to his role as Treasurer of the COPRI Board of Governors, Scott serves as chair of the COPRI Tidal Hydraulics committee. He is also serving as a panel member of the Mississippi Coastal Improvements Program External Peer Review.
