COPRI Members Create New Academy of Coastal, Ocean, Port, and Navigation Engineers

The new Academy of Coastal, Ocean, Port and Navigation Engineers (ACOPNE), developed by practicing engineers who are COPRI members, will launch on October 1. The Academy will work to improve the practice, elevate the standards, and advance the profession of the four related enginnering specialties. It has begun to meet these goals with the development and oversight of a voluntary, post-licensure specialty certification program. Qualifying licensced engineers may obtain certification and become an ACOPNE Diplomate in one or more of these four disciplines:

• Diplomate, Coastal Engineering (D.CE)
• Diplomate, Ocean Engineering (D.OE)
• Diplomate, Port Engineering (D.PE)
• Diplomate, Navigation Engineering (D.NE)

 To achieve Diplomate Certification, applicants must have the following qualifications:

• Formal engineering education consisting of a Bachelor’s degree in engineering, plus 20 additional advanced credit hours.
• Licensure as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) or national equivalent for non-U.S. applicants
• Additional professional experience beyond licensure
• Strong professional ethics
• Strong oral and written communications skills
• Continuing professional development

Formally supported by Civil Engineering Certification, Inc, a separately incorporated and wholly-owned subsidiary of ASCE, a joint CEC and COPRI committee worked over the past year to develop the ACOPNE. Committee members included:
