A wide variety of infrastructure projects, designed and implemented by civil engineers, can have unintended impacts on fish and other aquatic organisms. However, most engineers get no or little training concerning biological and physical processes of watershed dynamics, including fish biology. This lack of knowledge of biological/engineering interface can result in long delays, redesign and suboptimal solutions both for the natural resources and for the intended purpose of the infrastructure.

$249M/$299NM

Late Registration: Registrations must be received three days prior to the webinar date or a $25 late registration fee will be assessed.

Seminar Benefits:
  • Learn how watershed processes and infrastructure can work together instead of in opposition
  • Learn early identification of potential fish/aquatic organism interaction, useful references for a variety of issues and how to get expertise and detailed references
  • Discuss how to reduce or eliminate costly operations and maintenance issues while providing fish friendly conditions
  • Learn how to avoid repeated engineering design cycles and streamline permit processes
  • Earn one Professional Development Hour (1 PDH)
Seminar Outline:
  • Infrastructure and watersheds – in conflict and in harmony
  • Examples of infrastructure - fish/aquatic organism interaction with problem solving references
  • Where to go to get assistance or learn more
Seminar Instructor:

Marcin Whitman, P.E., is a senior hydraulic engineer with the California Department of Fish and Game and has nearly 20 years experience with fish and aquatic organism passage as well degrees in agriculture engineering, marine engineering and marine biology. He has worked on hydropower, agricultural and municipal water storage and delivery systems; state, federal and local roads projects as well as federal, state and local flood control projects. He was a member of the Aspen Institute Dialogues on Dams and Rivers and has testified to the U.S. Senate on the same. He has given lectures for U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, NOAA, Federal Highways, ASCE and various state agencies and has consulted on fisheries issues for development projects in Asia. He is an immediate past president of the BioEngineering section of the American Fisheries Society.
