Joint AEI - Steel Institute of New York Symposium on Deteriorating Steel Buildings Infrastructure

America’s infrastructure is aging and failing, a crisis in which the U.S. is not alone.  Many countries face the same dilemma, and for the same reason: funding has been insufficient in addressing deficiencies. The problem is particularly acute in large urban areas, where growing populations stress society’s support systems, and accidents, natural disasters, and terrorism threaten infrastructure safety and security.   Engineers of the twenty-first century face the daunting challenge of modernizing the fundamental structures that support civilization---highways and bridges to be sure, but equally important the structures that house critical services for which highways and bridges provide access:  institutional, commercial, manufacturing and public safety facilities.

Any effort to address deficiencies in infrastructure should include a re-examination of how the design of these facilities is handled in the first place. Given the recent and growing interest in sustainability, which has raised awareness of the need to reduce overall energy and virgin material inputs, carbon emissions, and landfill waste, it is only logical that buildings be designed to  reduce corrosion and other causes of infrastructure decay as well.

Based upon the above considerations, AEI and the Steel Institute of New York are cooperating to offer a Joint Symposium on Deteriorating Steel Buildings Infrastructure.  The symposium is intended to provide an opportunity for sharing ideas and educating participants about how the above objectives can be achieved when designing buildings in structural steel.  Some of the topics the symposium will address are:
