Update on the PAK Study for the AE PE Exam

The Professional Activities and Knowledge (PAK) Study for the Architectural Engineering P.E. exam started with the first experts’ workshop on October 19 in Reston, VA.  A call for volunteers to participate in the workshop yielded an adequate number of qualified participants for each of the specialty areas within architectural engineering.

A list of survey questions was developed during the workshop.  A limited pilot will be run in late November.  The AEI members and the graduates of the AE programs who have a P.E. license were then invited to take the Internet-based survey between December 18, 2007 and January 31, 2008.

A sufficient number of respondents are required for the study to be statistically valid.   Fortunately, there was a strong response from the AEI membership and AE program graduates, and 470 people completed the survey.  A psychometrician is currently reviewing and analyzing the completed surveys and will prepare a report specifying the activities and areas of knowledge that are considered important for a professional architectural engineer.  That report will be reviewed by the participants of the second experts’ workshop expected to take place on April 11 in Reston, VA.  The updated exam specifications will be established during that workshop.
