AEI 08 a Clear Success

AEI’08, the 2008 Architectural Engineering Conference held September 24-27, 2008 at the Hyatt Regency Tech Center in Denver, Colorado, was by all accounts a clear success.  It started on Wednesday, September 24 with the training workshop on Post-Disaster Evaluations organized by ASCE’s Committee on Critical Infrastructure, presenting procedures developed to evaluate the safety of buildings and other infrastructure systems after earthquakes, winds, floods, and fire.   In the Wednesday afternoon workshop on floor vibrations, Thomas M. Murray, Ph.D., P.E., the Montague-Betts Professor of Structural Steel Design, Department of Civil Engineering at Virginia Tech, covered procedures for evaluating steel framed floor systems for vibration serviceability due to walking and rhythmic activities, using criteria based on the AISC/CISC Design Guide 11 Floor Vibrations due to Human Activity.

On Thursday and Friday a large number of technical papers on a wide variety of technical topics were presented in five concurrent sessions, for a total of 40 technical presentation sessions.  A number of new topics were introduced at this conference, including structural glass, demolition, architectural engineering education, BIM, the Building Security Rating System, and progressive collapse of building structures. Professionals and academics were both well represented among the conference speakers.

On several occasions, presenters scheduled to speak in a given session did not show up and did not inform the conference organizers that they wouldn’t be able to give their presentation.  Fortunately, it was possible to substitute other presentations on the spot, which in all cases were outstanding.  Mohammed Ettouney, Ph.D., P.E., F.AEI and Edd Gibson, Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE, were each able to save entire sessions by giving impromptu presentations.  The staff engineers of one of the exhibitors at the conference, Professional Investigations Engineers, were also able to fill in for several absent speakers and gave excellent presentations.

The highlight of the conference was the Friday 10th Anniversary Celebration and Awards Luncheon.  Paul Guyer, P.E., the founder of AEI retraced the history of the early days of AE, commented on its accomplishments and made suggestions for its future.  Other members, who played key roles in establishing AEI, Al Dorman, P.E., Hon.M.ASCE, F.AIA, Tom Babacz, P.E., and Stan Caldwell, P.E., F.ASCE, were also attending the event.  A number of awards were presented to recognize outstanding achievements.

On Saturday, two well-attended workshops were held.  The Architectural Engineering P.E. exam writing workshop was held to write items using the exam specifications updated during the latest PAKS study. The Forensics of Façades workshop organized by the ASCE Technical Council on Forensic Engineering to introduce the participants to key features of building façades failures.

Several committee meetings were held on the occasion of the conference.  The Academic Council, Structural Glass Committee, and the C2P Standards Committee of AEI, the Board of Direction of the Building Security Council and the Board of Governors of the Architectural Engineering Institute all had productive meetings.   The majority of the AEI student chapters were represented at the conference and a meeting of the student representatives was held on Saturday morning to discuss student chapter issues and elect the AEI national student chapter officers.

Industry exhibits and the Career Fair, introduced for the first time at the AEI conference, were well attended.

Student participation was strong and attendance was higher that at the 2006 conference. All in all, AEI’08 was a great success!
