CALL FOR PAPERS
Stabilization of Buildings Workshop
August 25-27, 2009
At the US Army Corps of Engineers,
Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC)
Vicksburg, Mississippi
Sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate, Infrastructure and Geophysical Division
Present your research and technology applications at the 2009 Stabilization of Buildings Workshop.
Since science and technology plays a critical role in response to the threat of terrorism, DHS S&T established a goal to accelerate the delivery of enhanced technological capabilities and fill the gaps of DHS agencies. The Infrastructure and Geophysical Division supports this goal by proposing the preparation of a research agenda based on enhancing building stabilization resulting from an improvised explosive device (IED) attack. Questions to be explored during this workshop include:
- What constitutes an adverse condition that would inflict harm to first responders and disaster victims? What are the monitoring methodologies and technologies (both off and on site) for the identification of buildings which are near to failure conditions or collapse?
- What are the efficient, and real-time decision-making techniques that are compatible with both monitoring and assessment methods? What are the assessment methodologies (both off and on site) for the identification of buildings, or building systems, which are near to failure conditions or collapse?
- What are efficient, economic and proven techniques that might be used now for building stabilization? What is the possibility of utilizing portable structures or inflatable barriers that could be deployed under emergency conditions to allow the access of first responders to the areas of high risk? What are the relationships and cost effective opportunities for DHS with other governmental agencies, international entities, private sector, and academia?
