First Workshop of the PAK Study for the Architectural Engineering P.E. Exam to be held October 19!

The approval of the Architectural Engineering P.E exam by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) was a very important milestone for the future of the architectural engineering profession.  The exam was first offered in April 2003 and has been offered each year since then, and there are now 41 states that offer an AE PE registration.  To keep the P.E. exam current, NCEES requires that a “Professional Activities and Knowledge” study (PAK) be conducted every 5 to 6 years.  The PAK study for the Architectural Engineering exam must be completed during FY 2008.  It involves:

  • A first experts’ workshop to prepare a survey questionnaire.
  • A survey of the architectural engineering community using that questionnaire.
  • The review and analysis of the survey responses by a psychometrician.
  • A second experts’ workshop to prepare updated exam specifications.

Following a special announcement in August, a number of AEI members volunteered to take part in the PAK study workshops.  The first workshop is scheduled on Friday October 19, 2007 in Reston, Virginia.  There are currently a sufficient number of volunteers practicing primarily in the structural and electrical areas, but additional volunteers are needed in mechanical and construction areas.

If you are a licensed P.E., are practicing primarily in the mechanical or construction areas, are available on October 19 and would like to participate in the study please contact Melissa Prelewicz, P.E., M.ASCE, Director, Professional Activities at ASCE right away (703-295-6341, 800-548-2723 ext. 6341, or prelewicz@asce.org). Travel expense reimbursement will be provided to the workshop participants according to the usual ASCE practice for committee travel: air fare (purchased at least 14 days in advance), $100 per diem and $20 for miscellaneous expenses.
