May/June 2006
2006 Architectural Engineering Conference March 29 – April 1, 2006 held in Omaha, Nebraska The Architectural Engineering Institute held its bi-annual conference in Omaha, Nebraska from March 29 to April 1, 2006 at the Embassy Suites Downtown. The 189 conference participants enjoyed 31 technical sessions with over 110 presentations, 6 free workshops, and 2 free technical tours. The workshop topics ranged from fire and smoke containment in high-rise buildings to the national effort on Hurricane Katrina. The technical sessions themselves also covered a wide array of topics ranging from topics such as Hurricane Katrina to structural, mechanical, and electrical systems. Both the technical sessions and the workshops offered great opportunities for attendees to earn PDH credits for engineers and AIA Learning Unit/Continuing Education credits for architects. Conference attendees were also treated to two tours, the first of which was of the Holland Performing Arts Center and the second of the Peter Kiewit Institute at the University of Nebraska. 2006 Architectural Engineering Conference Tours Conference attendees were treated to two technical tours while in Omaha. The first tour took place on Thursday March 30 at the Holland Performing Arts Center. The center is Omaha’s new 2,000 seat symphony hall and is intended to be the embodiment of the city’s commitment to the musical community. It draws thousands of visitors each year along with top performing artists. The design of the facility is meant to enhance the acoustical experience for both the audience and the performers.
2006 Architectural Engineering Conference Keynote Speakers To open the conference attendees were provided the opportunity to listen to three keynote speakers. The first presenter was Terry J. Kroeger who is the director of the Omaha World-Harold Company and holds the position of President and Chief Operating Officer. In recent years he has overseen as project manager the construction and development of the Freedom Center, which serves Nebraska’s largest newspaper. He retraced how this 325,000 square foot building came about. The Freedom Center covers four blocks in downtown Omaha, and houses the new shaftless printing presses, material handling center, assembly equipment, and a parking garage. 2006 Architectural Engineering Conference Workshops During the Conference six workshops were conducted from Wednesday to Saturday. The workshops covered a wide range of subjects: Ensuring Fire and Smoke Containment in High-Rise Buildings, The Concrete Capacity Design Method for Anchors in Concrete, Blast Design Essentials, The National Effort on Hurricane Katrina, Design of Storm Shelters, and Forensics in Architectural Engineering. The workshops were given by leading professionals in each field, including John Valiulis, P.E., John Silva, S.E, Werner Fuchs, Ph.D., Eve Hinman Eng. Sc.D., P.E., Assoc. AIA, Najib Abboud, Ph.D., and Hector Estrada, Ph.D., P.E. These workshops were also a great opportunity to learn the state-of-the-art techniques and ideas that now form the field of Architectural Engineering. Each workshop lasted three hours and afforded the participants an opportunity to earn 3 PDH or AIA Learning Units.
Thank You One and All AEI would like to sincerely thank all of those who participated in the 2006 Architectual Engineering Conference: Building Integration Solutions. Special thanks go to the presenters and volunteers who graciously gave their time to help ensure that this was the best conference AEI ever presented. AEI also thanks the conference sponsors: Hilti, HDR, Johnson Controls Inc., AISC, AE Associates, DLR Group, the Peter Kiewit Institute, The Steel Network, Leo A. Daly, and ARA. Without their support it would not have been possible to provide receptions, provide excellent technical tours, and provide funds for the student competition and partial support for university students. AEI News AEI is Seeking Nominations for the Board of Governors The Nominations and Election Committee of AEI is currently seeking nominations for the AEI Board of Governors. Nominations must be in the form of a letter and can be sent to the chair of the Nominations and Elections Committee, Edd Gibson, at egibson@mail.utexas.edu or Rob Bowman at rbowman@asce.org.
Volunteers Needed to Write questions for the PE Exam The Architectural Engineering Exam Development Subcommittee is looking for people to help write problems for the Architectural Engineering Exam. The Architectural Engineering Exam is offered through NCEES in April of each year to the state licensure boards. The exam covers four main areas of knowledge which are construction management, electrical and lighting systems, mechanical systems, and structural systems. All persons involved in the exam development process must be licensed professional engineers and should possess a high level of knowledge within one of the topics covered by the exam. The examination and the test item writing and review process are performed within the guidelines developed by NCEES and all participants must agree to and abide by the requirements defined by NCEES in order to protect the confidentiality and security of examinations. If you are interested in writing and reviewing problems for the Architectural Engineering Examination, please contact Rob Bowman, (rbowman@asce.org) at AEI Headquarters or Mark McAfee (mmcafee@dwase.com), the AE P.E. examination committee chair.
Enhance the Effectiveness of your Committee This is an open invitation to any AEI committee that would like to sign up for an e-room. An e-room is a secure area accessible through a browser that is open to the members of a committee and is used to place documents to be read or worked on by fellow committee members, chat with one another, and conduct polls. This is an excellent way to stay in touch with the committee members and to stay informed of the latest developments. If you are interested in starting and using an e-room please email Rob Bowman at rbowman@asce.org.
The Building Security Council (BSC) The Building Security Council was formed in November 2005 as a result of an AEI initiative in order to fill a gap that existed in building security for the private sector. BSC is focused on enhancing the safety of the public and promoting building security. The Council plans to maintain and administer a security ratings system. For a fee, building owners can voluntarily apply for a rating. The owners receive a rating after submitting detailed information on the design and operation of their buildings which is then evaluated against standardized rating criteria by a panel of experts. It is the hope of the Council to establish a set of industry-wide standards in order to foster collaboration between professionals from different fields so as to foster building security. For more information on BSC please read their inaugural newsletter.
