Omaha-Known for more than its Steaks

Home of such well known American celebrities as Fred Astaire, Marlon Brando, Henry Fonda, Nick Nolte, Malcom X, and Gerald Ford, Omaha is rich in both culture and history.  Founded in 1854, Omaha soon became a major Midwestern city with the arrival of the transcontinental railroad in 1862 and the Trans-Mississippi Exposition in 1898.  To this day the Union Pacific Railroad remains one of the city’s largest industries helping to support the economy along with other businesses such as Mutual of Omaha, Berkshire Hathaway, and Werner Enterprises.

There is a myriad of attractions for one to see when visiting Omaha ranging from the Henry Doorly Zoo and the Botanical Gardens to the Strategic Air and Space Museum and the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts.  In terms of restaurants Omaha offers everything ranging from the familiar McDonalds and Panera Bread to more upscale accommodations such as The Passport Restaurant.  For more information on Omaha please visit:

Enhance the Effectiveness of your Committee

This is an open invitation to any AEI committees that would like to sign up for an e-room.  An e-room is a secure area accessible through a browser that is open to members of a committee and is used to place documents to be read or worked on by fellow members of the committee, chat with one another, and conduct polls.  This is an excellent way to stay in touch with the committee members and to stay informed of the latest developments.  If you are interested in starting and using an e-room please email AEI at aei@asce.org.

The Building Security Council (BSC)

The Building Security Council was formed in November 2005 as a result of an AEI initiative in order to fill a gap that existed in building security for the private sector.  BSC is focused on enhancing the safety of the public and promoting building security.  The Council maintains and administers a security ratings system that for a fee, building owners can voluntarily apply for a rating.  The owners then receive a rating through submitting detailed information on the design and operation of their buildings which is then reviewed against standardized rating criteria by a panel of experts.  It is the hope of the Council to establish a set of industry wide standards in order to foster collaboration between professionals from different fields so as to make building security safer.  For more information on BSC please read their inaugural newsletter.

AEI Membership Renewal

This is a reminder to all AEI members that our membership renewal process started on January 1, 2006.  Upon renewal of your membership you will be entitled to all of the membership benefits such as discounted rates on workshops, publications, seminars, and the upcoming 2006 AEI Conference.  You will also receive bi-monthly e-newsletters keeping you updated on all of the relevant information as it pertains to the Institute and the AE profession and the quarterly on-line magazine Means, Meathods, and Trends.  If you have not already renewed please do so by March 31st, 2006.  It is only through your support that AEI is able to offer programs such as the 2006 Conference.
