AAWRE Diplomates Recognized for Service on ASCE's External Review Panel (ERP)

On February 12, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recognized and honored three Diplomates, along with thirteen other individuals for efforts and service on ASCE's External Review Panel (ERP). An award ceremony was held at the U.S. Corps of Engineers' headquarters in Washington, D.C. for the ERP panel members. The ERP was requested to peer-review the efforts of the Interagency Performance Evaluation Task Force (IPET), the group commissioned by the Corps to assess the performance of the hurricane protection system in New Orleans and southeastern Louisiana. The Academy's Board of Trustee member and President of Espey Consultants, William H. Espey, Jr., Ph.D., P.E., D.WRE, along with Thomas L. Jackson, P.E., D.WRE, F.ASCE, Senior Vice President, DMJM Harris and President of Southeast Louisiana Floor Protection Authority-East, and Robert G. Traver, Ph.D., P.E., D.WRE, Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Villanova University, with the other panel members were awarded the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal (OCSM). The OCSM award is an honor traditionally given by the Corps' commander and chief of engineers to recognize outstanding service and contributions to society and the nation on the part of civilians. Also at the Congress, AAWRE will host three separate two-hour Ethics Sessions to provide Diplomates a convenient opportunity to fulfill annual Professional Development Hours (PDH) for renewal requirements. Each identical session will be conducted by Professor Steve K. Starrett, Ph.D., P.E., D.WRE, from Kansas State University. Diplomate Credential Renewal

If you earned your D.WRE credential in the spring of 2005 or 2006, your current renewal deadline is May 31, 2007. If you would like to request for an extension to submit your renewal, contact AAWRE at certification@aawre.org.

AAWRE Announces Professor Asit K. Biswas as Honorary Diplomate, Among Group of New Diplomates

AAWRE welcomes and congratulates fifty-eight new Diplomates from the spring review cycle. Out of this group, Professor Asit K. Biswas, Ph.D., Founder and President of the Third World Centre for Water Management in Mexico, was nominated and deemed an Honorary Diplomate, Water Resources Engineer (Hon.D.WRE) of the Academy. Professor Biswas was given honorary status by the Academy's Board of Trustees for his life's work and achievements in global water issues. Professor Biswas founded the International Journal of Water Resources Development and continued as Editor-in-Chief for the past 21 years, and his latest noteable achievement was receiving the 2006 Stockholm Water Prize. Presently, Mr. Biswas has been appointed by Prime Minister of Japan to serve as the Chief Advisor for the Asia Pacific Water Summit, which is scheduled to be held in December 2007, in Japan. AAWRE congratulates Professor Biswas and the rest of the group of new Diplomates. The complete list of all new Diplomates will be published in the next newsletter.
