Ethics Sessions a Hit at EWRI Congress

The Academy organized three 2-hour sessions during the Congress to provide AAWRE diplomates and other Congress attendees a convenient opportunity to fulfill annual Professional Development Hours (PDH) renewal requirements. The participants had the opportunity to examine different ethical dilemmas for engineers, as presented via video. The sessions were presented as interactive short courses, which encouraged a forum for small group discussions.

Kenneth Wright's Paleohydrological Institute - ASCE Distinguished member and AAWRE diplomate, Kenneth R. Wright, P.E., D.WRE, Dist.M.ASCE, founder and chief engineer of Wright Water Engineers, Inc. in Denver, Colorado, hopes to show the importance of paleohydrology in engineering. Mr. Wright has studied and investigated the paleohydrology of Machu Picchu (Peru) and two ancient sites at Mesa Verde National Park (CO). Webster's defines paleohydrology as “the study of ancient use and handling of water.” Mr. Wright began the Wright Paleohydrological Institute (WPI), a public non-profit foundation dedicated to furthering the knowledge of past civilizations through the study of ancient water management and practices, in hopes to further educate people about the importance of this discipline and study. Request for Feedback on Paper on Oil and Water - AAWRE diplomate, Thomas Smith, PE, BCEE, CPSWQ, CPESC, CESSWI, LEED AP, D.WRE, Vice President of Engineering at Paradigm Engineering, Ltd., in Lewisville, Texas, recently drafted a paper on his findings in treatment approach concept for water produced during oil and gas operations. Water management strategies need to be used in the oil and gas industry to protect the environment and to minimize the amount of waste produced. Oil-produced and gas-produced water recovery technology can include pretreatment followed by membrane filtration (a combination of micro-filtration, ultra-filtration and/or reverse osmosis). This produced water recovery treatment method is similar in process and technology to that being used in brackish groundwater and seawater desalination. Produced water can be treated and reused as an alternative to fresh water sources. This proposal presents a treatment approach concept for consideration and review purposes only. This is a prepublication work in progress and will be edited for detail over time. If interested, please send any comments or feedback to Thomas Smith at: tom.smith@paradigm-engineering.com.
